About Vern Coyner

August 12, 2008

Vern Coyner, a native of Arizona, is a seasoned executive engineer in the oil industry with 30 years’ experience, both domestic and international.

In 1978, Vern Coyner earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Geological Engineering from the University of Oklahoma. Vern Coyner began his career in 1978, while still in college, at Petroleum, Inc., as a production engineer.

Vern Coyner then took a position as drilling engineer/superintendent at the now-non-operational Santa Fe Minerals, Inc., in Oklahoma City. There, Vern Coyner served as a drilling/exploitation engineer. Vern Coyner was also involved in drilling operations in the Anadarko basin on wells ranging from 12,500 to 16,500 feet deep,

Vern Coyner was soon promoted to senior drilling engineer at the company’s corporate office, and soon after, he was appointed drilling superintendent for company’s Midland, Texas, job site, where Vern Coyner supervised well site operations, casing jobs, and workovers. He divided his time between the field and the main office in Oklahoma City.

Vern Coyner used his skills as an engineering consultant based in Midland, Texas, in 1986, where Vern Coyner advised engineering team operations for the predecessor to Pacific Enterprises, then named Terra Resources.

Pacific Enterprises Oil Company, based in Houston, hired Vern Coyner as operations/drilling engineer, in which capacity Vern Coyner planned and supervised drilling projects in Texas’ Gulf Coast and the East Texas area.

Vern Coyner then took the opportunity to become senior drilling engineer for Occidental Oil and Gas Corp., a global position that took Vern Coyner too many countries, including Malaysia, Siberia (former Soviet Union), Algeria, Vietnam, Venezuela, Albania, Oman, New Guinea, and Bangladesh. This international focus was due to Vern Coyner’s top-level assignment as the company’s International Drilling Pool (IDP). Vern Coyner largely worked on rotation and on a call-out basis.
Vern Coyner parlayed that experience into his next position, as senior drilling engineer for Pioneer Natural Resources USA, Inc., also now defunct. Vern Coyner then served as senior drilling/production engineer at Southwestern Energy Co. These positions led to Vern Coyner’s association with Saudi Aramco as senior drilling engineer.

Vern Coyner began his tenure at ASRC Energy Services — E&P Technology, based in Anchorage, Alaska, in 2001. Here, Vern Coyner continues to serve as senior drilling engineer and project manager on a contractual basis. In this capacity, Vern Coyner has worked with Pioneer Natural Resources, and Kerr-McGee, among others, and was the lead drilling engineer for the deepest well in Alaskan history, an ERD well drilled from Northstar Island.
